"Love Knows No Gender: Why Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Celebrated"

"No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies your right to grow. Same-sex marriage, as with all human rights, is a fundamental freedom that should not be abridged because of gender." Alice Walker

This statement by Alice Walker emphasizes the importance of giving people the opportunity to develop and express themselves, as well as the idea that everyone should have access to all human rights, including the right to marriage, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

In the year 2018, during the judgment of Navtej Johar and UOI, the Supreme Court of India decriminalised homosexuality and granted legal recognition to the relationship between adults of the same gender. Recently, it has been argued that legalizing the same-sex relationship does not mean accepting same-sex marriage, which should come under Article 21- the right to life and personal liberty.

The centre further stated that marriage in our country depends on culture, custom, and societal values and calls the same-gender marriage notion an "elliest concept". In favour of the argument, it is said that every person has equal rights accorded by the constitution, and there should be global acceptance.

Despite the argument, same-sex marriage in Indian society is needed since it is an inherent human right to wed with the person you love and wish to spend the rest of your life with, regardless of gender. Discrimination in the form of denying this right to anyone based on their sexual orientation is against the principles of equality and justice.

It brings a lot of good things to society in terms of protection and equality for all genders. By making it legal, same-gender couples would have legal recognition and protection, including rights regarding property, inheritance, and healthcare. It would also encourage societal acceptance and inclusivity, lessen the stigma and discrimination experienced by India's LGBTQ+ community, and promote gender inclusiveness, which India has needed for a long time.

People should embrace a progressive mindset towards same-sex marriage. They must acknowledge that love and companionship are not restricted to a particular gender or sexual orientation. Society should comprehend that everyone has the right to live freely and pursue pleasure without having to worry about prejudice or violence.

With regard to this, it is also foremost necessary to encourage education and understanding regarding gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as to fight cultural conventions and attitudes that support discrimination against the LGBTQ+ population. We can create a more harmonious and welcoming society where everyone has equal rights and opportunities, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity, by embracing diversity and inclusivity.

To conclude, marriages between people of the same gender should be a basic human right that must be acknowledged and safeguarded to promote a just and equitable society for all.
